Pink Ombre Homemade Cake

Eid is always a special occasion for my family. And like all special occasions in my family, there is always a homemade cake to mark that day. As a child my mother would allow the children to decorate the Eid cake, now as an adult, I enjoy it just as much as I did as a young child. And  I believe that passing on the tradition of having a homemade Eid cake is a great way to bring a family together. The only difference is that I am now the head baker and cake decorator, but I am not complaining. 

Eid Party Cake

The cake is usually the centrepiece to the Eid party and something that speaks to the guests just as much as the decoration. The cake should always fit the theme of the party. I have made a foolproof easy Eid cake that will wow your guests and it will look like is made by a professional however it was baked at home. The recipe for the actual cake is quite simple, and you probably already have most of the ingredients in your pantry. What I love about this ombre cake is that it can be used at any party, not just an Eid party it could be baked for a Bridal shower or a henna party.

The concept for my cake is a whimsical Eid tea party, 4 layered pink ombre, and with a few decorations on top to give the cake a delightful charm. I have kept the flavours of the cake simple, with homemade Vanilla Cake, and Vanilla buttercream icing which is store bought. You can, however, can add lemon zest to give it a nice kick.

Even though I usually make my own buttercream icing for my cakes, I didn’t have the time to make it for this particular one and found that store-bought icings work just as well and what makes this cake so easy to bake.  

HOMEMADE CAKE RECIPE:

1//  Sift the flour

2//  In a separate bowl, cream the butter and castor sugar until light and fluffy

3//  Add the eggs one at a time

4//  Add the vanilla

5//  in 1/3 of flour

6//  Fold in 1/2 of the milk

7//  Fold in another 1/3 of flour

8//  Fold in the rest of milk

9//  Fold in the rest of the milk

10// Add a few drops of pink food colouring to the cake mixture and fold it in.

11// Pour some of the cake mixture into 1 cake tin.

12// Add a few more drops of the pink food colouring to the rest of the cake mixture and fold it in. This will make the cake a shade or two darker.

13// Pour some the new cake mixture into another cake tin.

14// Add more drops of the pink food colouring into the cake mixture and fold it in. This will make the cake a shade or two darker.

15// Pour some of the cake mixture into a cake tin.

16// A more food colouring to the remaining cake mixture.

17// Pour the mixture into a cake tin.

Don’t forget to line the bottom of your cake tins with baking paper.

Bake the cake tins for 35 mins, check if it is fully cooked by using a toothpick. Insert the toothpick to the centre of the cake if it comes out dry the cake is baked if the cake is wet put the cake back in the oven for a few more minutes.

Once all the cakes are baked, keep them on the cooling rack to cool down. I usually leave the cakes for a few hours to cool down completely.

DECORATING THE HOMEMADE CAKE

Now is the fun part. Place your darkest pink shade cake on your serving plate, dollop some icing on the top of that cake and spread it evenly then sandwich the next darkest shade of pink cake over it. Again dollop some of the icings on top of the cake and sandwich the next darkest shade again repeat the process until you have the lightest shade of pink cake at the top and the darkest shade of pink at the bottom.

Next, you will place the crumb coat of icing on the cake, this will stop the crumbs showing and tainting the cake once it’s finished. Ice your whole cake with a thin layer of icing, and spread evenly. Then place your cake in the fridge and chill for at least an hour.  Repeat the process and ice the cake again with a thin layer of icing and smooth down the icing with a palette knife, and scrape off any excess icing to give a smooth appearance. Chill the cake. 

As I was icing my cake thinly I used 3 layers of icing to get the effect I desired, I wanted my cake to be covered with icing but not fully cover I still wanted to bits of the actual cake to be visible so it had a naked cake effect.

Now for the top decorations, you can use whatever decorations you have available to you. I choose macaroons and a pink chocolate bar. With 24ct gold edible leaf, and finally the perfect Eid Mubarak cake topper by Silhouette Sue. 

Keep your cake in the fridge until you are ready to serve it.
