How To Cut Down On Your Wedding Guest List

Finalising a wedding guest list can be a daunting task. You put it at the bottom of your to-do list, but soon find that everything is a numbers game. To be able to book and organise wedding invitations, catering, venue, favours and seating arrangements, you really do need to know exactly how many people will be attending your wedding.

Now here comes the anxiety-filled task of who is in and who is out.
Fear not – we have found a few handy tips listed below when it comes to planning your wedding guest list without ruffling too many feathers.

  1. Be clear on what your budget is and how many people you can accommodate first.
  2. If you are receiving financial contributions from parents on either side – be honest about your wants and how much involvement you want in creating the guest list.
  3. Start your list with the most important people in you and your partner’s lives.
  4. Continue building your list by adding close friends, extended family and/or work colleagues.
  5. While you’re writing your list do not include any plus one’s until your list is complete.
  6. Decide if you want to have children in attendance.
  7. Don’t invite anyone you haven’t met before or heard of just to make one or two of your guests more comfortable.
  8. If you haven’t spoken to a ‘friend’ in the last three years – don’t invite them.
  9. Send out A-list invites with plenty of notice – don’t send B-list invites two weeks before the wedding (people will know and be offended that they are backups in case someone doesn’t RSVP).
  10. Avoid last minute add-ons and pressure from family/friends.

Dina’s Top Tip: Stick to your list and enjoy your big day. We have heard plenty of guest list dramas/dilemmas from our clients to know that people will always find something to complain about.

All you can do is remember that YOU are the bride and it’s your big day. You can’t stress over people’s comfort levels and exceed your budget just to meet people’s unattainable expectations. All that matters is that you and your husband to be will have the time of your lives.
